Q

There are different types of purposive sampling:
- availability/convenience
- typical case sampling
- extreme or deviant case sampling
- maximum variation sampling
- snowball sampling

Explain them

A

Availability
Individuals chosen because they are easy to reach and readily available. Quick and effective but not so representative.

Typical case
Typical and representative for a particular phenomenon. To gain a deeper understanding of phenomena.

Extreme/deviant case
Understand the factors that contribute to their uniqueness.

Maximum variation
To gain understanding of a different set of cases. This helps identify commonalities and differences between situations.

Snowball sampling
Particulalry usefull in hard to reach populations.

Q

Explain what overt and covert in non-participant (neuralistic) observational studies

A

Overt:
Those being observed are aware of the observation taking place.

Covert:
Those being observed are unaware of the observation taking place. A benefit from this is that people often change their behaviour if they know that they are being observed. In this case they don’t change their behaviour. The disadvantage is that it could be unethical.
