What types of stigma are there?
- Internalized stigma
- Perceived stigma
- Enacted stigma
Explain internalized stigma
Individuals with stigmatized conditions come to accept and believe the negative stereotypes associated with their conditions and apply them on theirselves.
Example: an individual with a mental health condition believes the are weak or crazy because of the stereotypes about mental illness.
Explain perceived stigma
An individual is aware of the negative attitudes and stereotypes by others towards their stigmatized conditions.
Example: an individual with a visible disability will anticipate on the fact that he will be treated unfairly by others because their disability is stigmatized.
Explain enacted stigma
Also known as discrimination. Refers to the actual experiences of unfair treatment.
Example: a transgender person who is dinied a job opportunity because of their identity.
