Methodological Issues Flashcards
What is representativeness?
Representativeness links back to the sample. Is the sample a fair representation of the target population
What is Generalisability?
It is the amount that you can say the results that you gathered can be said to represent the population. If you studied dogs you can’t say the results can explain cats behaviour too
What is internal reliability?
This refers to how consistently/ accurately a method measures within itself
Describe external reliability
How consistent is the method if it is repeated. Similar to test- retest
What is inter-eater reliability?
It is the degree of agreement among the raters used
VALIDITY
.
What is internal validity?
It refers to wether the study’s results were really due to the manipulation of the hypothesis or due to extrinsic factors
Explain external validity
The extent to which the results can be generalised beyond the study. Links to ecological validity
What is face validity?
Does the measuring tool (eg, questionnaire) seem to be measuring towards the aim of the experiment
Eg/ a mood rating scale for measuring the change in mood has good face validity
What is construct validity?
Investigating if the measure really is measuring the theoretical construct it is supposed to be
Eg. Will A rating scale measure people’s moods
What is concurrent validity?
Is the degree to which a test corresponds to an external criterion that is known concurrently. Pretty much, is the test up to date
Give two studies high in reliability
Milgram
Maguire
Give 5 of the code of ethics
Consent Right to withdraw Confidentiality Protection of participants Debrief
Give an unethical study
