METASTRONGYLES (LUNG) Flashcards
name 4 metastrongyles
- angiostrongylus vasorum
- crenosoma vulpis
- oslerus osleri
- alurostrongylus abstructus
describe the general features of metastrongyles?
indirect (most)
LT migration
L1 in poo (kinky tails/dorsal notch)
BAL required to asses patent infection
what is the IH of angiostrongylus vasorum?
slug
describe the basic lifecycle of metatrongyle?
eggs released into pulmonary artery hatch in alveoli coughed and swallowed --> L1 in poo IH (slug) eat L1 --> L3 slug w iL3 eaten by dog iL3 - blood and lymph --> heart and pulmonary artery
what is the PPP for a. vasorum?
5-8wks
what is the pathogenesis of a. vasorum?
resp distress kg loss coagulopathies sudden death CHF, dilation
how is a. vasorum infection treated?
MOX, fenbendazole and ML
csteroids
cage rest
surgerical removal
what is seen on xray of a. vasorum infection?
patchy interstial and avleolar pattern
what are the main features of crenosoma vulpis?
fox = host cuticular folds adults in tracheal + bronchioles IH = mollusc larvae have straight tails
describe the main features of oslerus osleri
DIRECT lifecycle - weird
adults in tracheal nodules nr bifurcation
iL1 in sputum
transmission = bitch –> pup (licking etc)
name the major features of aelurostrongylus abstructus
cats adults - lung tissue L1 in poo (S-shaped tail) PT hosts IH = mollusc often asympt, pos coughing
what metastrongyle has an IH = earthworm and eggs in poo (weird….)
pig metastrongylus apri
how can you ID metastrongylus apri L1
‘knob’ on end of tail, rather than kink or notxh
what disease does m. apri cause
catarrhal eosinpholiic bronchiolitis and severe dyspnoea and nasal d/c
generally - how do you get a sample of eggs from a lung worm infection
BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage)
