METAR Flashcards
What is a METAR?
Report of observed weather elements at a specified time and place.
When are METARs issued?
Typically every hour.
What is a SPECI?
It is a METAR taken between scheduled observations because of significant change in weather.
To which do the following Airport Codes belong: CYWG, CYBR, CYPG and CYTR.
Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage La Prairie and Trenton.
Following the Time of Report and Wind Group, what would the following mean/ represent: CCA? How about CCB?
It indicates a correction, CCB is a further correction.
What does VRB03KT mean?
Wind speed and variable direction.
True or False?
If wind speeds are > 3kts and direction varies more than 60 Deg in 10 mins, they may be reported in the following format: 200V300.
True
Visibilities reported as 15SM are generally less, the same or greater than 15SM?
Greater
How many Oktas does FEW, SCATTERED, BROKEN and OVERCAST cover?
FEW: 1-2
SCT: 3-4
BKN: 5-7
OVC: 8
With regards to layer height, how high is 001, 040 and 200 in feet AGL?
100, 4000 and 20 000 ft.
What is the ceiling height?
Height AGL where summation amount is 5/8 or more oktas, or, height of lowest BKN/ OVC layer.
What is the minimum ceiling height for visual flight in the RCAF?
Equal or greater than 1500 ft.
What is vertical visibility and what does it mean?
VV is when a surface based layer completely obscures the sky, or 8 oktas. It means how high up into obscuring weather the observer can see.
What are some points regarding Ceiling and Visibility OK (CAVOK)?
Replaces the visibility and sky condition when:
Visibility greater or equal to 10 km. No cloud below 5 000 ft. No CB or TCU No Precip, TS, sandstorm or dust storm No shallow fog or low drifting dust/ sand/ snow.
What are some drawbacks of an automatic weather station?
Sees limited portion of the sky
Cloud amounts determined by time a cloud is sensed, 30 mins = 4 oktas.
Cannot detect cloud above 25000 ft
Cloud types not determined
Measured over limited area, maximum reported area is 9+ SM.
