Metamorphic rocks Flashcards
What are Metamorphic rocks?
Any rock that is changed by heat and/or pressure
What are changes that take place during the formation of metamorphic rocks that they depend on?
The type of original rock.
The amount of heat to which the original rock is exposed.
The amount of pressure caused by the weight of the rocks above.
How quickly the changes take place.
What is foliation?
Foliation is the movement of minerals into layers or bands.
What is contact Metamorphism?
Caused by heat from a nearby chamber
What is a intrusion?
Anintrusionis a body ofigneousrock that has crystallized from molten magma, transforming parent rocks into metamorphic rocks.
What is a parent (rock)
Parent (or country rocks) are the original rocks before they are turned into metamorphic rocks.
What does Contact metamorphism form?
Forms a narrow “contact aureole”
When does Contact Metamorphism occur?
Occurs when a magma body intrudes cooler country rock
What is Regional Metamorphism?
Associated with P and T
(high pressure – dominant factor)
Over large regions
Usually associated with mountain building and plate collisions
→ rocks with foliated textures
May occur over wide temperature range
Higher P and T = metamorphism
What are diamonds?
Diamonds are gemstones that can be formed in metamorphic rock when parts of the crust become pushed into the mantle.
What is the rock cycle?
The rock cycle is a model used by scientists to explain the cycling of materials that make up rocks by processes within Earth and on its surface.
Which sequence of change in rock type occurs as shale is subjected to increasing heat and pressure?
shale - slate - phyllite - schist - gneiss
