Metals, bonding and atoms 1 Flashcards
Learn about properties of metals
What holds the atoms together in a metal?
The “sea” of free electrons.

What is an ionic bond?
A chemical bond caused by the electrostatic force between oppositely-charged ions in an ionic compound.

Why do ionic bonds form?
Ionic bonds form because elements want to have full outer electron shells, just like Noble Gases do. Noble gases don´t react because they already have full outer shells.
What is the charge on an electron?
-1
What is the charge on an atom?
No charge! It is neutral.
What is the electronic configuration of Sodium? (atomic number 11)
2,8,1
Why does carbon in the form of graphite conduct electricity?
It has “free electrons” between the covalently-bonded layers.

Why are the atoms of the elements in group 8(or 0) stable?
They have a full outer shell

What does “ductile” mean?
It can be drawn (pulled) into a wire.
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metals

What type of elements form covalent bonds?
Non - metals

Which type of bond shares electrons?

Covalent bond
What type of bonding transfers electrons?
Ionic bonding.

Why do metals conduct electricity?
They contain “free electrons” which can flow and carry a current.

The symbol Li+ means
A) that this lithium isotope has 1 positive charge
B) that this lithium ion has 1 positive charge
C) that this lithium ion is looking for 1 positive charge
D) that lithium has 1 valance electron
That this lithium ion has 1 positive charge
What does the atomic mass tell you?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
What does “malleable” mean?
It can be hammered into shape.
What is the charge on a proton?
+1
Which particles are in the nucleus of an atom?
Neutrons and Protons
What is an ion?
An atom that has lost or gained electrons.

What is the relative mass of a proton?
1
What does “sonorous” mean?
It makes a ringing sound when hit.
