Fuels and batteries Flashcards
End of topic test revision
which two elements do most fuels contain?
Hydrogen (H) and carbon (C)
What is another word for burning?
Combustion
Is burning an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Exothermic. It releases energy to the surroundings.
What are the products of burning hydrocarbon fuels?
Carbon Dioxide and water. The carbon in the fuel combines with oxygen to make CO2 and the Hydrogen in the fuel combines with oxygen to make H2O
What impurity in fuels makes acid rain?
Sulfur. It burns to produce SO2, which dissolves in rainwater, making it acidic.
Which product of burning fuels causes the “greenhouse effect”?
Carbon dioxide. (CO2)
Balance the equation for combustion of methane
CH4 + __ O2 ⇒ ___ CO2 + __ H2O
CH4 + 2O2 **⇒ **CO2 + 2H2O
Draw the displayed structure of methane CH4
H
H—C—H
H
Unfortunatly I don´t quite have the hang of this yet! There should be two more lines, joining the C to the other two H atoms.
