Q

Properties and uses of iron and steel

A

PROPERTIES
Iron: good conductor, can be magnetised
High carbon steel: hard, very strong, potentially brittle
low carbon steel: malleable, strong and tough but vulnerable to corrosion
stainless steel: very resistant to corrosion
USES
Iron: magnets, transformer cores
High carbon steel : railway tracks
Low carbon steel: car parts
stainless steel: cutlery

Q

What is steel

A

Iron produced from the blast furnace contains high amounts of carbon which makes it brittle. Remove this carbon and it becomes steel
3 kinds of steel
Mild steel- easily shaped and used for car parts
High carbon- very hard and used in drills, hammers and tools
stainless- corrosion resistant, strong used in cutlery

Q

What are transition metals

A

Transition metals have the following properties:
- malleable
- form distinct colours
-conductors
- many variations such as Fe3+ or Fe2+
-catalysts
- lower reactivity than group 1 and 2
Precipitates formed with NaOH
fe2+ forms green
Fe3+ forms brown/ orange
Cu2+ forms blue
