Bonding, structures and properties Flashcards
1
Q
What are the properties of metals
A
Ductile, malleable, shiny, high melting point, conductor of heat and electricity
2
Q
Why do they have these properties
A
Conductors: delocalised electrons are able to transport a current
Strong: strong bonds between the positive metal ions and the (negative) delocalised electrons.
Malleable/ductile: The layers in the crystalline structure (molecules arranged in a 3d repetitive structure) can slide over each other
Hbp/hmp: stronger metallic bonds are more difficult to separate
3
Q
What changes the strength of a metal
A
A metal with more delocalised electrons e.g. al3+ has stronger forces of attraction
