Metals And Non Metals Flashcards
Metal physical properties
They are strong and malleable
Good at conducting heat and electricity
High boiling and melting point
Non metals
Dull looking Brittle Aren’t always solids at room temp Lower density Often doesn’t conduct electricity
Transition metal properties
Can have more than one ion
Coloured
Make good catalysts
Group 1 metals
Known as alkali metals
Soft low density
All have 1 electron on outer shell
What happens as you go down group 1
Increases in reactivity as outer electron is easily lost as not as strong attraction between nucleus
What happens when group 1 metals react with water
Vigorously and produces hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides
Group 1 metals with chlorine
Reacts vigorously when heated in chlorine gas and forms white metal chloride salts
Group 7 elements- halogens what happens as you go down
Decrease in reactivity as it is harder to gain an extra electron as weaker force of attraction from nucleus
Group 0 elements
Called noble gases
All have full outer shell
Colourless gases
Boiling point increases as you go down due to more electrons
