metals and ionic compounds Flashcards
3 types of bonding
metallic bonding
covalent bonding
ionic bonding
cation
a cation forms when electrons are lost from a metal atom .They form positive ions.
anion
Anions are formed when an atom gains one or more electron. They form negative ions
why are metals good conductors of electricity
metals have delocalised electrons which are free to move.
why are metals malleable
because the delocalised electrons allow the atom to slide over each other so that they can be shaped
why are metals lustrous
Because the delocalised electrons reflect light.
what is ionic bonding
When metal and non metal ions bond by electrostatic forces
how are the cations and anions held together by
electrostatic attraction
what is electrostatic attraction
electrostatic attraction is the attraction between the postiive and negative ions
properties of ionic ocmpounds
- Hard and have a high melting point
- brittle
- can conduct electricity if they dissolve in water or are melted
- Some salts are solubable
