Metals Flashcards
What are the properties of aluminium?
Soft, greyish-white, malleable metal that is conductive to heat and electricity that can be welded and is corrosion resistant
What are the properties of copper?
Red, tough, ductile metal that is an excellent conductor in electricity and is corrosion resistant
What are the properties of brass?
Very corrosive, yellow metal that tarnishes easily and is harder than copper. Good conductor in electricity
What are the properties of lead?
Soft, shiny, bright and malleable metal when new, but turns dull grey when oxidised. Resistant to corrosion
What are the properties of zinc?
Bluish-white metal that has a layer of oxide that protects it from corrosion
What are the properties of tin?
White and soft metal that is resistant to corrosion
What are the uses of aluminium?
Aircrafts, boats, window frames, saucepans, packaging and insulation, pistons and cranks
What are the uses of copper?
Electrical wires, cables and conductors, water and central heating pipes, printed circuit board
What are the uses of brass?
Castings, ornaments, valves, forgings
What are the uses of lead?
Protection against X-rays, roof coverings, paints, flashings
What are the uses of zinc?
Making brass, tanks, buckets, rust-resistant paint
What are the uses of tin?
Making bronze, tinplate
What are the properties of mild steel?
Tough, high tensile, ductile metal that cannot be hardened or tempered because of its low carbon content. It must be case hardened.
What are the properties of high speed steel?
Can be hardened or tempered, retains hardness in high temperatures
What are the properties of stainless steel?
Resistant to corrosion
