Metals Flashcards
What can the layers of atoms in metals do?
Slide of each other so metals can be bent and shaped
What do metals consist of?
Many atoms arranged in a regular closely packed pattern
What are alloys usually made of?
Two or more different metals. The different sized atoms of the metals distort the layers in the structure making it more difficult for them to slide over each other and so making alloys harder than pure metals
What happens if shape memory atoms are deformed?
They can return to their original shape when they are heated
What is metallic bonding?
Positively charged metal ions held together by strong electrostatic attractions to the electrons from the outer shell of each metal atom
What do metals conduct?
Heat and electricity because the delocalised electrons in their structure are free to move throughout the giant metallic lattice
