Atomic Structure And Quantative Chemistry Flashcards
How do you compare the masses of atoms?
By measuring them relative to atoms carbon -12
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons
How do you find the relative formula mass of a compound?
By adding all the relative atomic masses of the atoms in the formula
What is one mole of any substance?
It’s relative formula mass in grams
How do you calculate the percentage of an element in a compound from the formula and relative masses?
Percentage C in CO2 = 12 divided by 44 x 100 = 27 %
What is the yield of a chemical reaction?
How much product is made
How do you work out the percentage yield?
Actual yield divided by theoretical yield x 100
Why is it not always possible to make the calculated yield?
Some product may be left in the apparatus or it may be hard to sepearte the product from other chemicals
Why might not reversible reactions have a high yield?
The reactants may not have all reacted
