Metals Flashcards
Name the properties of metals.
Found on the left side of the periodic table
From left to right -> metallic character decreases
From top to bottom -> metallic character increases
Metalloids/ semi-metals -> display both metal and non-metal characteristics
Name the physical properties of metals.
Metal:
Malleable and ductile
Good conduction of heat and electricity
High melting and boiling point (mercury exception)
Non-metal:
Brittle
Don’t conduct heat and electricity
Low melting and boiling point
Describe the reactions of metals.
- Metal + Oxygen -> Metal Oxide
- Metal + Acid -> Salt + Hydrogen
- Metal + Cold Water -> Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
- Metal + Steam -> Metal Oxide + Hydrogen
Describe the uses of metals.
Aluminium:
Aeroplane -> Low density, high strength
Overhead cables -> Good conductor of electricity
Saucepans -> Good conductor of heat
Food cans -> Non-toxic
Window frames -> Resistant to corrosion
Copper:
Electrical wires -> Good conductor of electricity
Water pipes -> Malleable, Non-toxic, Unreactive
Cooking pans -> Malleable, Unreactive, Good conductor of heat
