1
Q

Where do metals come from

A

Most puremetals, comefrom the Earth’s crust.Metals are mixed with rocks and minerals called ore.

Q

The blast furnace

A
  1. A mixture of limestone, coke and haematite is added at the top of the blast furnace.
  2. Hot air is ‘blasted” into the blast furnace.
  3. The carbon reacts with the hot air to form carbon dioxide.
  4. The coke reacts with the carbon dioxide to form carbon monoxide.
  5. The carbon monoxide reduces the iron ore to form iron and carbon dioxide.
  6. The iron, pig iron, collects at the bottom of the blast furnace to be tapped off.
  7. Impurities collect at the bottom in a layer, ‘slag’, and can be tapped off.
  8. Waste gases are removed from the blast furnace.

Q

Ferrous vs Non Ferrous

A

Ferrous metals are metals that contain iron E.g. high/low carbon Steel (iron and carbon), stainless steel and iron

Non-ferrous metals are metals that do not contain iron E.g. Zinc (pure metal), Bronze (Copper and tin)

Q

What is an alloy

A

An alloy is a mixture of metals ornon-metals.
Examples of alloys are:
Copper + Zinc = Brass
Tin + Lead =Solder

They have better properties than pure metals, such as increased strength, increased corrosion resistance,
or reduced costs.

Q

Sustainability- advantages

A

Aluminum is very sustainable

  1. Recycling scrap metalpreserves natural resources
  2. Producing newmetalsreleases more greenhouse gas emissions thanthe recyclingprocessdoes.
  3. Recycling scrap metaluses far less energy and less water than mining for ore.

Q

Tools & Equipment- their use.

A

The Polishing Machine (also called the Buffing Machine) is used to polish soft metals such as aluminium

Usiht a Pillar Drill and a 6mm drill bit , Drill the hole for the keyring

Using a junior hack saw cut the ends of the aluminium bat
