Metallic bonds Flashcards
1
Q
Metallic bonding definition
A
The electrostatic attraction between the lattice of cations and the ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons
2
Q
Properties of metal
A
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- ductile (can be made into wires)
- malleable (can be bent into shape)
- Shiny when polished
3
Q
Why is metallic bonding described as non-directional?
A
Because of the force of attraction occurs in all directions between cations and delocalised electrons within the lattice structure
4
Q
Why are metals malleable and ductile?
A
when force is applied, one layer of metal ions slide over one another without breaking the metallic bond
