Metallic bonding + properties Flashcards
what are the properties of metals
they conduct electricity
conduct heat
malleable
ductile
high melting points
how does metallic bonding look
a lattice of + metal ions
surrounded by delocalised electrons
How are high melting points related
bonds within metals are strong because they have strong electrostatic forces of attraction between + metal ions and surrounding delocalised electrons
How is electrical conductivity related
electrons in metallic bonding are delocalised which means they can carry a charge throughout the strucutre
A flow of electrons is a current and they can transfer heat energy too
How is malleability related
metals can be pressed into new shapes and when you remove the force it remains in the new shape
Layers of metal ions can slide past one another and when force is removed the electrons hold the metal ions in shape
How is ductility related
Metals can be stretched into wires - layers of metal ions can slide past one another until they are longer and thin
when the stretching force is removed delocalised electrons quickly re-form metallic bonds
