Metallic Bonding Flashcards
Metallic bonding
Involves delocalised electrons
Why are most metals solid at room temperature?
Electrostatic forces between metal atoms and delocalised sea of electrons are very strong so lots of energy needed to be broken
Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat?
Delocalised electrons carry electrical current and heat through whole structure
Why are most metals malleable?
Layers of atoms can slide over each other
Malleable
Can be bent, hammered or rolled into flat sheets
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
When another metal mixed with a pure metal, new metal atoms will distort layers so harder for layers to slide over each other
Alloy
A mixture of 2 or more metals or a metal and another element
