Energy Changes Flashcards
Exothermic reaction
Transfers energy to surroundings usually by heating
Shown by rise in temperature
Endothermic reaction
Takes in energy from surroundings
Shown by fall in temperature
Uses of exothermic reactions
Hand warmers
Self heating cans of coffee
Use of endothermic reactions
Sports injury packs
How can energy transfer be measured?
Taking temperature of reagents, mixing them in polystyrene cup and measuring temperature of solution at end of reaction
Problem with energy measurements?
How can you solve this?
Amount of energy lost to surroundings
Put polystyrene cup into a beaker of cotton wool to give more insulation + a lid to reduce energy lost by evaporation
Bond breaking
Endothermic
Bonding formation
Exothermic
What does a reaction profile show?
Energy changes
Exothermic reaction profile
Products at lower energy than reactants
Endothermic reaction profile
Products at higher energy than reactants
