Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is metallic bonding?
A
Metal is a giant structure
There are electrons in the outer shell of the metal atoms they are delocalised. There are strong forces of electrostatic attraction between the positive metal ions and the shared negative electrons
In a regular shape
The delocalised electrons give the metal all its properties.
2
Q
What are the properties of metals ?
A
Very strong - lots of energy needed to break it down. High boiling and melting points Shiny solids at room room temperature Not soluble in water More dense than non metal Malleable Carry current and heat due to electrons
3
Q
Properties of non metals?
A
Dull looking, Brittle Lower boiling points Don’t conduct electricity Lower density Non metals gain electrons Metals lose electrons
