metallic bonding Flashcards
what structure do metals have?
giant metallic lattice structure
what charge do the metal atoms have ?
positive metal ions
what attraction is there between metal and electrons?
there is an electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and the negative delocalised electrons
how does number of electrons affect melting point?
the more electrons an atom can donate the higher the boiling point
if an atom donates more electrons then it will have a higher boiling point
why does magnesium have a higher boiling point than sodium?
magnesium can donate 2 electrons (group 2 ) whereas sodium only donates 1 (group 1 )
why are metals good thermal conductors?
the delocalised electrons can transfer kinetic energy
why are metals good electrical conductors ?
because the delocalised electrons are free to move and carry a charge
why doe metals have high melting points?
strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive metal ions and negative electrons which need a lot of energy to overcome them
why are solid metals insoluble?
metallic bonds are too strong to break
