14
Q

swap and drop method: work out the formula of ionic compound

A
  1. write the formula of 2 ions with charges
  2. swap the charges around
  3. drop the charges - so change it to outside a bracket in bottom right instead e.g (NO3) 2
  4. simplify to lowest whole number ratio

16
Q

why do most ionic compounds dissolve in water ?

A

as water molecules are polar they can attract the positive and negative ions and break up the structure

17
Q

why can ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or dissolved?

A

because ions are free to move around and carry a charge

18
Q

when can ionic compounds conduct electricity?

A

when molten or dissolved

19
Q

why do ionic compounds have high melting points?

A

as there are many strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions. lots of energy is needed to overcome these forces
