electronegativity Flashcards
what is the definition of electronegativity?
the ability for an atom to attract electrons towards itself in a covalent bond
how does electronegativity change in periodic table?
the further up and right you go in periodic table (excluding noble gasses) the more electronegative the element is
fluorine is the most electronegative
what scale shows us how electronegative an element is ?
pauling scale
what bonds do atoms have if they have a different electronegativity ?
polar bonds
what does the more electronegative atom in a bond do ?
pulls electrons towards itself
why does electronegativity increase from lithium to fluorine?
More protons / bigger nuclear charge
Same or similar shielding / electrons in the same shell
atoms get smaller
