Metallic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Give the characteristics/Properties of Metallic bonding, at least 4
A
Characteristics:
- electrons are delocalised = free to move between the ions (only the outer shell)
- no. of delocalised electron per ions matches the group no. –> higher the no. of the delocalised electron the stronger metallic bonds
- can carry electrical/thermal energy so thus good conductors for electricity/heat
- they are METAL IONS/METALLIC LATTICE not ATOMS
Properties:
- high melting points (not high as ionic’s electrostatic force
- rows of metal ions can slip through each other -> bent into different shapes = MALLEABLE)
- DUCTILE = drawn into wires
