Q

Cl has an electronic configuration of 2.8.7

using that, how do you tell what the GROUP and PERIOD is

A

Group = 7 – as that’s how much electrons are in the outer shell

Period = 3 – as that how many shells that contain an electron

**He = G - 2, P - 1

Q

What is the symbol of “relative formula mass” and how to calculate it?

what happens if there is a big no. in front of 2 elements

A
  1. (Mr)
  2. e.g. (O2) = relative atomic mass x no. after it
    -> 16 x 2 = 32
    if diff element = just add the sum after multiplying

harder one:
CuSO4 (dot here floating) 5H2O
(63.5+(32.1+(16x4))+((2+16)x5)

  1. for example the one above: 5H2O -> first do (H2O) then (x) by 5

Q

How would you do relative atomic mass?

A

1st: isotopes (just an element)
2nd: percentage “ABUNDANCE”

3rd: atomic mass x (abundance (divide) 100)
e. g. boron = 10B/19.90% -> 10 x 0.01990 = 1.99
