Ions/molecules/ formulae Flashcards

1
Q

give 6 characteristics for ions/ molecules and formulae

A
  • ionic bonding always occurs between metals & non-metals
  • between ions a force of electrostatic attraction exist -> strong force = very high melting points
  • solids at standard temperature form an ionic lattice
  • dissolve in water -> water molecules are polar and separate ions
  • conduct electricity when dissolve or when Molton
  • electrostatic force strength depends on the charge of the ions (2+ charge produces stronger electrostatic force than 1+ charge)/ ionic radius (ions with a smaller radius produce stronger electrostati forces)

Q

what are the rules for naming a compound?

A
  • if 2 elements (a metal and non-metal) -> metal stay the same/ non-metal name end in (ide)
  • if 3 elements (a metal and 2 non-metal (1 has to Oxygen)) -> metal stay the same/ non-metal name ends in (ate)
