Metallic Flashcards
Structure
3D lattice of metal atoms surrounded by delocalised electrons.
Bonding type
Metallic bonding. Electrostatic forces of attraction.
Melting point
High. High amounts of energy required to break the strong metallic bonds.
Strength
Malleable. Bonds are non directional and thus metals can be bent or hammered into shape. Also ductile - can be pulled into wire.
Conductivity
Yes. There are freely moving charged particles; the delocalised electrons. Which can carry the charge. Additionally in liquids both atoms and electrons are free to move and carry the charge.
Solubility
Insoluble. Any attractive forces between the solvent molecules and the atoms are not strong enough to overcome metallic bonds.
