Ionic Flashcards
1
Q
Structure
A
3D lattice of cations and anions in alternating arrangement.
2
Q
Bonding
A
Ionic bonding.
3
Q
Melting point
A
High. High energy required to break strong ionic bonds.
4
Q
Strength
A
Lattice structure kept rigid by directional ionic bonds. Because ionic bonds are so strong only great force will break them. When broken ions move out of alignment thus resulting in repulsive forces causing the lattice to shatter.
5
Q
Solubility
A
Many are soluble. The ionic bonds are overcome by the attractive forces between the polar h20 molecules and the ions. The separated ions are surrounded by H20 molecules to form hydrogen ions.
