Covalent Flashcards
Diamond and Silicon
Atoms
How are they bonded together?
In a 3D web
What kinds of bonds?
Covalent bonds
Force of attraction?
Strong directional force of attraction between the positive cations and negative anions.
Melting point?
High. High amounts of energy is required to break the strong covalent bonds. 3D solid networks melt when the atoms are free to move from their fixed position.
Strength
Hard. Lattice structure kept rigid by strong directional covalent bonds. Only great force will break them.
Conductor?
No. There are no charged particles to carry the charge.
Solubility
Insoluble. Any attractive forces formed between the solvent molecules and the atoms are not strong enough to overcome the covalent bonds.
