Metal: processing Flashcards
1
Q
What is work hardening
A
AKA strain hardening, strengthening of a metal or polymer by plastic deformation
2
Q
What is ductile
A
Form a metal into thin stripes (only work with ductile)
3
Q
What is annealing
A
Heat treatment that changes physical and sometimes chem properties to increase ductility and reduce hardness to make it more workable, easier to form
4
Q
Advantages of annealing
A
- improve workability
- reduce brittleness
- enhance utility
- increase ductility
- improve magnetic property
5
Q
Disadvantages of annealing
A
- time consume
- more expensive
- reduce formability
6
Q
Common metals of annealing
A
- steel
- cast iron
- aluminum
- copper
- brass
7
Q
What is case hardening
A
Process to increase the hardness
8
Q
Advantages of case hardening
A
- increase strength & durability
- improve wear-resistance
- extend lifetime
9
Q
Disadvantages of case hardening
A
- less depth of hardness
- lots of care should be taken
- risk of galling
