Metal: electroplating and anodising Flashcards
What is electroplating
It is a technique in which a thin layer of a metal is used to coat (or plate) another object.
How does the process benefits
It is often use to protect objects against corrosion or improve the external aesthetic
What does it involve
This involves passing of an electric current through a solution called “electrolyte”. It is done by dipping two terminals called “electrodes” into the electrolyte and connecting them into a circuit with a battery or other power supply
What is anodising
The part to be treated forms the anode electrode (for electroplating), the part to be treated is the “carthode”
What does anodizing produce
A coating made from “oxide” (contains least 1 oxygen) of the base (non-ferrous metal) usually aluminum
What are some. Pre-manufactured components
- nails
- latch
- bolt
- hinge
- nut
- screw
