Metal Processes, Re-distribution Flashcards

1
Q

What is press forming

A

Sheet metal is clamped over a die of the product that will determine the final shape of the pressing. A hydraulic press pushes the die into the sheet metal, the sheet of metal is then remove and the process can be done over and over again

Q

What is spinning?

A

it is where a circular sheet of metal is clamped onto a rotating former which is symmetrical. the sheet of metal is then pushed onto the former by a roller till the shape is made

Q

What is cupping

A

A sheet of metal is clamped down above a hole. then a drawing punch pushes the sheet into the hole making the cupped shape although the depth of the sheet doesn’t surpass the length of the diameter

Q

What is deep drawing

A

this is when the length of the object exceeds the length of the diameter. A sheet of metal get clamped down above a hole, this sheet of metal then gets pushed into the hole by a deep drawing punch to create a circular object such as a can of coca cola.

Q

What is forging

A

forging is where metal gets heated and then shaped by using localised compressive forces. usually done with a hammer and anvil.

Q

What is drop forging?

A

A die is made from cast tool steel and this is secured to the top of an anvil. a ram is also equipped with a die that resembles a mould the ram then creates the compression force the moulds the heated work piece into the shape of the dies

Q

What is bending

A

this is where a sheet or plate is put on top of a die and pressed down by a pressure punch to bend the metal into place. the machine most commonly used is known as a press brake

What is rolling

A

this is where the stock material is then passed through sets of rollers to reduce the thickness of the material

Q

What is investment casting

A

investment casting is also known as the lost wax process. A shell mould is built up around a wax pattern that can be melted away leaving a cavity which is then filled with molten metal

Q

What is low temperature casting

A

Metals such as Pewter and silver can be cast into jewellery and other items using moulds carved or cut into MDF, Cuttlefish, Silicone or Vucanised Rubber
