Metals, Addition/Fabrication processes Flashcards
What is MIG welding?
Wire-fed consumable electrode is melted into the weld pool to then join the two pieces of metal together
What is TIG welding?
It is electric arc welding process that is similar to MIG welding except the electrode doesn’t melt instead a separate filler is needed. It joins stainless steel as well as non-ferrous metals
What is spot welding?
Used to join two sheets of metals together in spots
What is Oxy-acetylene welding?
permanently joins mild steel together. it is useful for quick repairs and is useful when there is no electricity
What is soldering?
Soldering is a joining process used to join different types of metals together by melting solder
What is brazing?
A way of forming permanent joints in metal by melting a brazing rod at 880 degrees Celsius between two parts
What is riveting?
this is the permanent joining method used to join sheet metal or plates together. Rivets are metal fasteners that have a ‘head’ at one end, and a shaft or tail at the other end.
What are some temporary joining methods and fasteners?
-self tapping screws
-Machine screws
-Nuts and bolts
