Metal Cutting 3 Flashcards
What is facing?
The tool is fed into the rotating work on one end to create a flat
surface on the end.
What is contour turning?
Instead of feeding the tool
along a straight line parallel to the axis of
rotation as in turning, the tool follows a
contour that is other than straight, thus
creating a contoured form in the turned part.
What is Form turning?
In this operation, sometimes called forming, the tool has a shape and is fed into the work to cut desired form.
What is boring?
A single point is fed linearly. parallel
to the axis of rotation, on the inside
diameter of an existing hole in the part.
What is an engine lathe?
Typical lathe, holds one tool.
What is a turret lathe
Can hold multiple tools to automate a process
What is the purpose of a dog?
When a part needs high dimensional accuracy it can be help between two centres. A dog transfers the torque from the lathe to the part
What is a chuck?
Uses jaws to hold a work piece.
What is a collet?
consists of tubular bushing with longitudinal slits. are used to grasp and hold barstock. A collet of
exact diameter is required to match any barstock diameter.
What is a face plate?
A device used to grasp parts with irregular
shapes
