metal Flashcards
metals
all metals have the same basic properties due to the special type of bonding that exists in metals
the outer electrons of each atom can move freely. the atoms become positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons
metallic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between these ions and electrons the ions are surrounded by the electrons so the attraction acts in all different directions
metal properties
high melting boiling points and density - as there is a strong attraction between delocalised electrons and the positive ions causing very strong metallic bonds. their strong metallic bonds need a lot of energy to break
strong but malleable
because metals have high tensile strength (the maximum stress that a material can bear before breaking when it is allowed to be stretched or pulled.)
but can still be hammered into different shapes
good conductors of heat and electricity
due to the sea of delocalised electrons which move freely through the metal carrying heat energy or an electrical charge
alloys
pure metals often aren’t right for different jobs
you can change a metals properties by mixing them with other elements to make alloys
