ionic bonding Flashcards
ions
charged particles, occur when atoms gain or loss electrons
forming a full outer shell
atoms want a full outer shell so they lose or gain electrons to gain one, whichever is easier.
positive and negative ions
losing electrons causes a positive charge (cations)
gaining electrons cause a negative charge (anions)
reactive groups
as electrostatic forces are from the nucleus it is easier for elements in group 1, 2 to lose electrons as you go down the group as they the farthest from the nucleus(they are more reactive)
because of electrostatic forces elements in group 7, 8 gain electrons easier at the top of the group as they are the closest to the nucleus (more reactive)
ionic bonds
ions with opposite charges make ionic bonds. when a metal and non-metal react together the non metal gains electrons becomes negatively charged and the metal loses electrons becomes poitively charged so they both have full outer shells
