C1 States Of Matter Flashcards
Solids
When particles have strong forces of matter between them which hold them in fixed positions. The particles don’t move so all solids keep a definite shape and volume. The particles vibrate in fixed positions - the hotter the solid becomes the more it will vibrate
Liquids
There is some force of attraction between the particles. They don’t keep a definite shape and will flow to fill the space they are confined in. The particles are constantly moving with random motion.
Gases
There is no forced of attraction between the particles they’re free to move around. They do not keep a definite shape or volume. The particles move constantly with random motion. The hotter the gas gets the faster they move
Physical change
When a substance changes from one state to another it is a physical change. No new substances are made the original chemicals just change state
Chemical change
During a chemical reaction, bonds between atoms break and the atoms change places - the atoms from the substances u start of with ( the reactants) rearrange themselves to form different chemicals. These new chemicals are called products. Chemical changes are hard to reverse
