Metabolism and Adverse Conditions Flashcards
Aestivation
Type of dormancy which enables some animals to survive periods of excessive heat and drought.
Consequential
Type of dormancy which takes place after the arrival of the adverse conditions.
Cyclic fluctuation
Regular variation in environmental conditions often beyond the tolerable limits of an organism’s metabolism.
Daily torpor
Physiological state in which an animal’s metabolic rate becomes reduced for part of each 24 hour cycle.
Dormancy
Period of an organism’s life-cycle during which growth and development temporarily come to a halt.
Hibernation
Type of predictive dormancy which enables some animals to survive adverse winter.
Individual marking
Use of bands or tags to track the route and distance covered by a migratory animal.
Inate
Behaviour which is inherited and inflexible.
Learned
Behaviour which is gained by experience and flexible.
Migration
Regular long-distance movement by the members of a species from one place to another where each place offers conditions more favourable than the other for a part of the year.
Predictive
Type of dormancy which takes place before the arrival of the adverse conditions.
Transmitter
Specialised piece of equipment attached to migratory animals which emits signals indicating the animal’s route.
