Metabolism Flashcards
What is catabolism?
Breakdown of larger molecules to smaller
Produces ATP
Active Tx
What is metabolism?
Chemical reactions in the body. Converts good to energy
Breakdown and production of organic molecules eg carbohydrates lips proteins
What is anabolism?
Join smaller molecules to form larger
Uses ATP
Build and synthesis molecules eg cells, hormones/ neurotransmitters, muscle/ bone growth
What is ATP?
Energy to: Perform maintenance and repair Support growth Produce secretions Build nutrient reserve
What is anaerobic metabolism?
Absence of O2 where lactic acid is metabolised resulting in O2.
What happens with increased lactic acid?
Produces acidosis
What is aerobic metabolism?
In presence of O2.
Large amounts can be produced and is preferred route
What happens in lipid metabolism?
Lipolysis
Breaks down to glycerol (enters pyruvate and Krebs cycle) and fatty acid (beta oxidation -no insulin inhibition, enters Krebs cycle) and produces ketones
Makes the most ATP -144
What happens with carbohydrate metabolism?
Glucose enters cell cytoplasm (glycolysis) converting to pyruvate.
Enters mitochondria Krebs cycle with O2.
Produce 34 ATP
What happens with protein metabolism?
Enters cell cytoplasm
Converts to amino acid
Enters mitochondria Krebs cycle and at pyruvate
Not very effective production of ATP
