Metabolism Flashcards
Homeostasis
Homeostasis: the maintenance of a constant internal environment within set limits as a dynamic equilibrium
Metabolism
Metabolism: process which derives energy and raw material from food and use them to support repair, growth and activity of the tissues of the body
Catabolism
Catabolism: the breakdown of larger molecules to release energy and reducing power to leave smaller molecules
Anabolism
Anabolism: using energy and reducing power to build up smaller molecule into larger ones
Catabolism drives anabolism
Obesity
BMI>30
Oxidation
Oxidation: removal of electrons or H
Reduction
Reduction : addition of electrons or H
Exergonic
Exergonic: energy release is greater than input
Endergonic
Endergonic: energy release is less than input
Hormone
Hormone: chemical messengers that travel in the bloodstream
Epigenetics
Epigenetics: a stably inherited phenotype resulting from changes in the chromosome without altering the DNA sequence
