metabolism Flashcards
An athlete cycles a workload which elicits 95% of their VO2max, after the first few minutes it starts to feel hard and keeps feeling worse until they can’t maintain the work load after 15 min.
▪ What mechanisms might account for this?
their blood lactate threshold 2 is likely below their work-rate meaning that they are slowly producing more lactate than can be metabolized.
A varsity rugby player and an untrained student
race 400 m who do you think has the highest
blood lactate at the end of the race and why?
assuming both did a maximal effort, the varsity athlete would have a higher blood lactate as their body may have:
- more glycogen stores
- more enzymes for regulating glycolysis
- higher pain tolerance
- more motivation
Without warming up a runner goes on a hilly
10km run maintains a constant velocity of
10km/h. Sketch their:
▪ ATP demands
▪ Oxygen consumption
▪ Label oxygen deficit
▪ Label EPOC
▪ What physiological mechanism account for
differences over time?
Instantly, they must tap into their anaerobic systems to produce ATP, then as they continue, eventually reach steady state (when heart rate and O2 delivery increase to match demands). this happens for every hill too.
more blah blah blah
Competition lead (rock) climbing routes take 2-
6min to complete. What strategies might they
use to recover between routes ~1h apart?
▪ What mechanisms are involved?
You would want to actively recover with some low intensity exercise to more quickly reduce the EPOC. This increases blood flow which helps with the removal of waste products such as transporting lactate to the heart, liver, or type 1 muscle fibers to be oxidized.
A Friend rides an exercise bike everyday until it
says they have burned 500 kcal. They than drink
a 150 kcal sports drink for ‘recovery’. They
complain to you that they are not losing any
weight, what do you tell them?
The exercise bike estimates calories burned and is not entirely accurate. Furthermore, there are other factors that must be accounted for such as total daily en expend and consumption.
When you exercise to burn calories, body down regulates other cal burning processes, and you actually don’t burn much of a higher net calorie amnt.
could measure using direct calorimetry where heat is measured to calculate calories burned
otherwise heart rate could be affective
