Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
Is the set of all chemical transformations that occur in a cell or organism
Mention the 2 objetives of metabolism:
- Obtaining energy from the environment
- Obtaining molecules of the cell (CHONP)
How metabolism is possible?
Thanks to all chemical reactions, catalyzed by enzymes (made of proteins)
In routes or metabolic pathways
What are the metabolic routes?
It’s a series of transformations (chain of steps)
What is a metabolite?
Mention an example:
The middle of a precursor and a product.
It can be intermediate or final
Example: Ácido láctico
Example of a Metabolic route (apple)
🍎 ➡️ 💩
- Precursor: Zanahoria
- Metabolito: Betacaroteno - Provitamina A
- Producto: Vitamina A
All metabolism occurs individually or together?
All metabolic routes are closely interconnected, carrying out the processes in a strictly coordinated way.
Explain metabolite:
- Can be intermediate or the final product of metabolism of macromolecules
- Can be substrate in another metabolic pathway.
What is a “waste product”?
The final metabolites that don’t participate in other metabolic routes are known as “waste products”
