Metabolism 1 - Mod. 3 Flashcards
what is metabolism?
the biochemical reactions that occur in the body that are necessary to maintain life
what are the 2 categories of metabolic reactions?
catabolic reactions and anabolic reactions
what are catabolic reactions?
break down large molecules into simple molecules
what are anabolic reactions?
require energy to create large molecules from simple molecules
what are macronutrients?
water, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins because they are required by the body in large quantities
what are micronutrients?
minerals and vitamins because they are needed in smaller quantities
what nutrients are able to provide fuel?
carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
what is the main source of energy for cells in the body?
glucose from carbohydrates
what is used to drive most chemical reactions in the body?
ATP (adenosine tri phosphate)
how is ATP produced?
cellular respiration
what are exergonic reactions?
reactions that release or generate more energy and than they use
what are endergonic reactions?
reactions that use more energy than they release
how does ATP facilitate energy transfer between catabolic and anabolic reactions?
by storing chemical energy in its phosphate bonds
What is aerobic respiration?
The process of producing ATP in the presence of oxygen.
What is anaerobic respiration?
The process of producing ATP without the presence of oxygen.
