Metabolic Syndrome & D Insipidus Flashcards
Metabolic syndrome
- define
- risk factors
Group of 5 risk factors that incr the likelihood of developing heart disease, diabets, stroke
Incr BP High BS levels Excess fat around waist High triglyceride levels Low HDL
Diabetes Insipidus
- define
- cause
Syndrome characterized by production of large amounts of dilute urine
Deficiency of vasopressin (AVP/ADH) secretion/action
Diabetes Insipidus
-clinical characteristics
Decr of 75%+ in secretion/action of vasopressin
Diabetes Insipidus
-etiology
Primary deficiency of vasopressin secretion usually due to irreversible destruction of neurohypophysis
Pituitary DI due to surgery in/around neurohypophysis
Diabetes Insipidus
-treatment
Desmopressin (DDAVP) = synthetic vasopressin analogue
Acts selectively on V2 receptors -> incr urine concentration, decr urine flow
- dose-dependent
- more resistent to degradation than vasopressin, 3-4x duration of action
