Metabolic Imbalances Flashcards
Low pH, Low HCO3
Metabolic ACIDosis
can be caused by too much hydrogen in the blood or too much bicarbonate leaving the body via kidneys
Metabolic Acidosis
cations minus anions= ?
anion gap
caused by accumulation of acid in the body and kidney is not excreting it properly
HIGH anion gap
caused by loss of bicarbonate via diarrhea
LOW anion gap
Excess acid (H+) in blood can cause body to move hydrogen IN TO the cell and push K+ out of cell IN TO blood causing _____.
HYPERKALEMIA
Headache confusion lethargy nausea vomiting increased RR decreased BP
signs and symptoms of Metabolic Acidosis
What is the treatment for Metabolic Acidosis?
Monitor levels of what?
example of diagnostic test?
Administer HCO3.
Monitor levels of potassium
EKGs
Loss of some acid (vomiting, NG tube suction) OR excess of HCO3 (consumption via antacid tablets, diuretic use)
The cause of Metabolic Alkalosis
High pH, High HCO3
Metabolic ALKALosis
numbness tingling weakness respiratory depression (similar to Hypocalcemia)
signs and symptoms of Metabolic Alkalosis
How does the respiratory system compensate for alkalosis?
it may DECREASE your RR in an attempt to hang on to CO2 (acid) in order to INCREASE acid levels
