Metabolic Bone Disease Flashcards
what is osteoperosis?
reduce bone mass of normal quality
related to imbalance of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity
favoring osteoclastic activity
what is serum characteristics of osteoperosis?
calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phophatase are normal
what is osteomalacia rickets?
abundance of unminerilized osteoid resulting in bone softening disease
what are some characrteristcs of osteomalacia/rickets?
deficiency of calcium, vitamin D, or phosphorus
malabsorption, liver disease and renal disease
what zone is lost in the physis with osteomalacia/rickets?
ZPM
zone of provisional calcification
what is hypophosphatemia?
renal disease acquired or genetic resulting in ph deficiency
leading to osteomalacia/rickets
what is hyperparathyriodism?
hypercalcemia–>hypophosphatemia
increased osteoclasctic activity
decreased alkaline phosphatase
what is secondary HPT?
hypocalcemia–>hyperphosphatemia
related to renal disease and GI malabsorption
chronic renal failure
what is tertiary HPT?
long term chronic renal failure
autonomous pathological function/hypercalcemia–>hypophosphatemia
overstimulated galnds, dont know how to shut off
what radiographic findings hypoparathyriodism?
osteosclerosis
clavical thickening
hypoplastic defintion
What are blood levels of hypoparathyriodism?
hypocalcemia–>hyperphosphatemia
what are pathological findings of hypoparathyriodism?
extensive calcification of of spinal ligaments and basal ganglia calcification
what is pseudohypoparathyriodism?
genetic disorder related to end organ resistence to parathyriod hormone with normal parathyriod hormone production
what are characteristics of pseudohypoparathyriodism?
short staure, obesity, round face, brachydactyly, abnormal dentation, and mental retardation
what are serum level for pseudohypoparathyriodim?
similair to hypoparathyriodism
hypocalcemia–>hyperphosphatemia
similar to secondary HPT
