Metabolic bone disease Flashcards
what are metabolic bone diseases
these are conditions that result from deficiency, failure, defects in metabolism, deposition of minerals, hormones, deposition of osteocytes
risk factors of metab bone disease
1) smoking
2) alcohol
3) excess intake of steroids
osteoplastic activity
consistent layering of osteoid matters for bone development
osteoclastic activity
a form of bone destruction
_ is a major amino acid for collagen formation
hydroxyproline
causes of bone metab dx
1) liver failure
2) kidney disease (stage 5)
3) GIT dx eg Chron’s disease
4) low Ca, low PTH, low Mg, low Vit B12
classification of metab bone disease
1) formation of normal mineralization, but there is defect in accumulation. Occurs in osteoporosis
2) formation of abnormal mineralization especially in conditions like osteomalacia where there is Vit D deficiency
3) formation of abnormal mineralization in conditions of CKD where renal osteodystrophy is a major example
4) formation of abnormal mineralization due to hypo function of PTH gland
