Ketosis

“Pregnancy disease”

A

Preg: high q feed, late preg can’t eat enough = mobilize body fat = ketosis = acidosis

Enlarged tan colored fatty liver, fat in abd cavity = fine chalky white specks, oil droplets in blood

70ml Ca-borogluconate SC, sugar and molasses orally, Caesarian.
Large camps, 2 water points, don’t allow heavily preg to get too fat

Grass staggers

A

Mg def ~ lush green pastures in cold wet conditions

Ewes look normal but when disturbed convulse, paddle wildly, foam at mouth, gasp for breathe

IV Mg inj, Mg lick, avoid lush pastures

Urinary calculi

A

High P ration, Ca:P disturbed = alkaline urine, stones form

Pain and discomfort, urethra blocked, grind teeth, restless, breathe fast, blood/pus at sheath, penis dark red/black

Ammonium chloride to dissolve stones, surgical catheter to drain urine from bladder

Change to grass/hay diet, urinary acidifier in food/water

Wet carcass syndrome

A

Excessive salt lick intake before slaughter

PM: water accum in surface tissues

No specific treatment, slow intro to licks, water at abattoir, hay if need energy replenished i.e. Long drive

Milk fever

“Hypercalcemia”

A

Graze high P-pasture, decreases Ca intake.
Twins- cannot eat enough to get Ca to fetus.

M. tremors, staggering gait, can’t stand, bloated from overeating, difficulty breathing, milk decreases, coma, death

Ca borogluconate inj into jugular, keep preg ewes off lush pastures, lime lick, legumes fed (high in Ca), feed Lucerne
