Metabolic and Deficiency Flashcards
Ketosis
“Pregnancy disease”
Preg: high q feed, late preg can’t eat enough = mobilize body fat = ketosis = acidosis
Enlarged tan colored fatty liver, fat in abd cavity = fine chalky white specks, oil droplets in blood
70ml Ca-borogluconate SC, sugar and molasses orally, Caesarian.
Large camps, 2 water points, don’t allow heavily preg to get too fat
Grass staggers
Mg def ~ lush green pastures in cold wet conditions
Ewes look normal but when disturbed convulse, paddle wildly, foam at mouth, gasp for breathe
IV Mg inj, Mg lick, avoid lush pastures
Urinary calculi
High P ration, Ca:P disturbed = alkaline urine, stones form
Pain and discomfort, urethra blocked, grind teeth, restless, breathe fast, blood/pus at sheath, penis dark red/black
Ammonium chloride to dissolve stones, surgical catheter to drain urine from bladder
Change to grass/hay diet, urinary acidifier in food/water
Wet carcass syndrome
Excessive salt lick intake before slaughter
PM: water accum in surface tissues
No specific treatment, slow intro to licks, water at abattoir, hay if need energy replenished i.e. Long drive
Milk fever
“Hypercalcemia”
Graze high P-pasture, decreases Ca intake.
Twins- cannot eat enough to get Ca to fetus.
M. tremors, staggering gait, can’t stand, bloated from overeating, difficulty breathing, milk decreases, coma, death
Ca borogluconate inj into jugular, keep preg ewes off lush pastures, lime lick, legumes fed (high in Ca), feed Lucerne
